Periodontal Exams and Cleanings

A comprehensive oral health exam will be performed by your periodontist at your initial dental visit. Regular periodontal exams and cleanings in Aurora or Littleton, Colorado with Drs. Versman, Heller, Beckman or Thousand and our hygienist will include the following:
Examination of diagnostic x-rays:
Essential for detection of tooth decay, tumors, cysts, and supportive bone loss. X-rays also help determine tooth and root positions and root canal infections.
Oral cancer screening:
Examine the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer and/or infection.
Gum disease evaluation:
Check the gums and bone around the teeth for any signs of periodontal disease. This includes the evaluation of the bone which holds in the teeth, the strength of the gum which protects the tooth and bone, gum recession and gum inflammation.
Examination of tooth decay:
All tooth surfaces will be checked for decay with special dental instruments and X-rays.
Examination of existing restorations:
Check current fillings, crowns, missing teeth, loose teeth, teeth that have migrated or shifted. The occlusion (bite) is also evaluated.

Periodontal Cleaning

Periodontal dental cleanings (periodontal dental prophylaxis) are performed by registered dental hygienists who have advanced training and experience. Their focus is to provide compassionate care in a comfortable environment. Your cleaning appointment will include a dental exam by the hygienist and/or the periodontist, and the following:

Removal of calculus (tartar):
Calculus is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments. Our hygienists are totally focused on doing this tartar removal in a gentle manner.
Removal of plaque:
Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums. This inflammation is the start of periodontal disease! With proper hygiene care techniques, patients can remove this soft plaque material at home.
Teeth polishing
Remove stain and plaque that is not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling. When possible, we want to leave you with a smile that you can be proud of.
Oral hygiene instructions
You will be taught how to properly take care of your teeth and gum tissues. We always review appropriate tooth brushing instructions and flossing techniques. Introduction of additional cleaning instruments will frequently be added to your home care armamentarium. We will customize your approach to oral hygiene on a very individual basis to meet your special needs.
Cavity prevention
When appropriate we will apply cavity prevention medicine to your teeth which will help to minimize the potential for tooth decay and which also can be used to reduce any tooth sensitivity that may be present.
Gum disease bacterial analysis
When indicated, we will use a microscope to evaluate the pathologic bacteria in the plaque below the gum. This is extremely helpful to analyze the activity and severity of gum infections that live under the gum.
